Fire Chief John Bernans
Chief Bernans began his career as a firefighter in 1969 with the Franklin Township Fire Department and was trained as a paramedic with the first group of paramedics to be trained in Franklin County. Chief Bernans moved to Perry Township Fire Department in 1983, where he served as Assistant Chief until 1989 when he became the first full-time Chief of Liberty Township Fire Department.
Chief Bernans is a member of many local, state, national, and international associations, to include: the International Association of Arson Investigators, the International Association of Fire Chiefs, The Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, the Central Ohio Fire Chiefs Association, the Franklin County Fire Chiefs Association and the Building Officials Code Administrators. He serves as President of the Delaware County 911 PSAP and is the Delaware County Firefighters Liaison to the Delaware County LEPC. Chief Bernans has served on the Board of Directors of the Ohio Arson School since 1990. He was a member of the U.S. Marine Corps for six years and is a Vietnam Veteran.

Bernans and his wife, Mary, reside in Columbus and are the parents of
two adult children and three grandchildren.

Assistant Chief Tim Jensen
Tim Jensen assumed the role of Assistant Chief on October 2, 2000. Chief Jensen is a paramedic and 11-year veteran of the department. Previously, he served as Liberty Township's Fire Prevention Officer with key responsibilities in the departments fire and arson investigations, daily fire safety inspections of all occupancies, coordination of new construction projects with the Liberty Township and City of Powell Building Departments, and public education projects.
Assistant Chief Jensen began his fire service career 20 years ago in his hometown of Centerburg, Ohio. He was involved with the initial development of the Delaware County Fire Investigation Unit, and remains active as a fire investigator. He is a member of several professional organizations including: International Association of Arson Investigators (IAAI), National Fire Protection Association (NFPA, Building Officials and Code Administration (BOCA).
